Story of Sati Anasuya and Dattatreya Anasuya was the wife of Sage Atri and is considered one of the greatest women in Hindu scriptures because of her devotion, purity, and spiritual power. She lived with Sage Atri in a hermitage in the Chitrakuta forest. According to the story, Sage Narada once told Goddess Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Parvati about the extraordinary spiritual powers and purity of Sati Anasuya. The three goddesses doubted this and decided to test her devotion and chastity. They requested their husbands — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — to test Anasuya. The three gods came to Anasuya’s hermitage disguised as old sages seeking alms. However, they placed a difficult condition that she could serve them food only without wearing clothes. This created a moral and spiritual dilemma for Anasuya. Using her spiritual powers and purity, Anasuya sprinkled sacred water called “Paadha Theertham” on the three sages and transformed them into babies. In this way, she fulfilled their request while preserving her dignity and devotion. She then fed the babies with motherly affection. When Sage Atri returned, he realized through divine vision that the babies were actually Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The three goddesses later arrived and requested their husbands to return to their original forms. The divine trinity then blessed Anasuya and fulfilled her wish of becoming their mother. The three divine forms united into one child with three heads and multiple arms. This child became the great sage Dattatreya, who is considered a symbol of wisdom, spirituality, and divine knowledge in Hindu tradition.
